Reflections: Stefanie Sun - I'm not sad

This song conveys so much raw emotion. It conjures up images that range from happy to sad, producing an almost bittersweet feeling. The lyrics itself tell the story of a girl whose lover has found someone else. Yet instead of taking a hateful, bitter attitude, the song is a ballad of blessing, of letting go, of liberation. But at the same time, a song of sadness and pain. I am always completely blown away at how easily I fall into the emotion of the song and become the character herself. The things said and discussed are so universal that it's so easy to just empathize and feel the raw pain without anger or rage.

First verse:

In this verse, you clearly feel the distance between the two lovers. Both stand together in silence, unable to speak, yet knowing full well what needs to be said. The last line, 'How long can this one-sided waiting last?', shows just how alone the narrator truly is. This image is even further seen through the previous line, 'Once again, standing outside your doorstep'. The image conjured is one of someone waiting, facing a closed door, yet still waiting, because no one has told her to leave, so she holds out hope.

Second verse:

In this verse, you clearly see what is wrong with their relationship. He has finally admitted to developing feelings for another. He talks of the other's warmth. And the narrator can feel that although physically, he is by her side, she no longer has a place in his heart. This is such a scary reality. To think that although the person you love is still with you physically, they no longer, emotionally, want to be with you. It's a sad truth, that people are capricious, that we change our love and likes like the wind. Yet it is because of the guilt we feel, that we stay, despite our emotions.

Chorus:
First part:

In this part, the narrator really expresses her feelings about the situation. She clearly does not blame the lover for his emotional cheating instead she places the blame on herself. This idea of self-sacrificing, of taking the blame, yet being the one who gets the short end of the stick, shows a sign of nobility and really touches me. Her acceptance and understanding of the situation is commendable. That line, 'It is I who wasn't by your side when you were lonely' shows how she truly believes this to be her fault. 'Stop saying you once loved me. Don't feel too much sorrow. I'm not sad.' shows how the lover himself is truly sorry for doing this to her. And even though she has every right to make him feel guilty, she instead tells him that she is in face not sad. That she is okay and she will be okay. The ending lines 'It's just I don't understand why the tears keep falling' is such a bittersweet line because more than anything, she wants to be able to let go of her lover, to let him enjoy his life and find love and happiness even if it's not with her. Yet she can't help but cry and feel bad about knowing that she is not the one to give him this happiness, that she is not the one he loves.

Second part:

Through this passage, readers see just how brave the narrator is. She tries her best to get across one central idea, 'I will survive'. Specifically, in the line, 'I'm not weak. You know that better than anyone else', through this, you really see that she is unfazed by this break-up, or at least puts up the facade of indifference. The beginning lines, 'Just let me go. Let me begin to enjoy this freedom', shows a sense of self-sacrifice. The way the singer belts out the lines, shows a level of insincerity as if the line is only said to placate the audience. The fact that she acknowledges that the memories do exist and will exist, reassuring him that he has left a permanent mark on her life, gives the sense of 'I will never forget you', yet not in a vengeful way, but rather a grateful tone. The last lines of the verse, 'Although it will be lonely. This will be my last gift', giving a sense of a very self-sacrificial person. The fact that she says last gift, gives a kind of finite tone to the verse itself as if she will no longer bother him.

Bridge:

The bridge is probably the most intriguing part of the song as it's tone and message is one that completely contradicts everything the narrator says in other parts. In this part, the narrator gives in and shows her true wishes and how she truly feels about the situation. The first lines themselves, 'Hold me tight. Just hold me tight. This moment of emotion. Let me keep in my heart', show insecurity as if she does not truly want to leave him, but knows it is for him, that it will bring him happiness. The last lines once again returns to her tough attitude ending with her telling him that 'everything will be forgotten and [she] will live better'.

Chorus:
Variation of second part:
不要再說 或許這是最好的結果
現在分手 總好過你不愛我一拖再拖
鬆開你的手 離開你左右
我向前走 這會是我 真正的解脫

In this ending verse, there's an optimistic tone. 'Maybe this is the best outcome'. This line itself shows that she holds no grudges, she is willing to let go for his happiness. The line after,'Breaking up right now is better than you not loving me and dragging this out', shows a sense of letting go, of knowing that the situation is unchangeable. The last lines show her telling herself that she must move forward, that perhaps that's the best way of letting go.
